Let me premise this with, I am Catholic. I am proud to be Catholic. I am not always proud of the Catholic church or all of its teachings however. I personally agree with the Church’s stance on abortion. I believe it is wrong and I could never personally do it. But I also believe that this is my belief and that governments probably shouldn’t have the right to force that belief on all.
In a Catholic magazine that my old parish gave Jason and I a subscription to there is an article about men and abortion. It talks about the devestating effects that abortion can have on men psychologically. Most of us think of abortion in terms of a woman’s right to chose. But is there/should there be something such as a man’s right to chose?
I think this issue brings up some interesting dilemas. One would think that in the end the woman’s choice would overrule since it is her body that will be inconvenienced for 9+ months…. but the child is still technically half of the man’s…. So why should a woman have the sole choice to end a life that is only half hers to end? How and should men be allowed more say? This would bring up some interesting possibilities… Would a man who refused to have his child aborted need to find a host mother to carry the fertilized egg?
I am interested in hearing people’s opinions about this. This is an aspect of abortion that I had never really thought about or considered until today…
