So I was watching Dr. Phil… I know, don’t all great blog posts start out that way. Well it was a show about how young kids and teenagers dress and modesty in society. He started the show with some 20something girls having a discussion with a 40something woman. The woman pointed out things the girls were wearing and shared how they were inappropriate. The 40something woman claimed that one should be modest to protect men from themselves, after all they are hard wired to think about sex once a minute so they can’t help it, and by dressing in certain ways we women are just leading them to sin…..
I am all for modesty, I don’t want to see everyone’s boobs and belly… I myself SELDOM show ANY cleavage despite that being sometimes hard to do with my “blessings”…. I even respect people who take modesty to a higher level through head coverings and other forms of modest dress.
My problem with this 40something woman and her statements came from her reasoning for dressing modest… to protect the poor men from themselves. I dress modest out of respect for myself, God and others…. not to prevent others from sin, but out of respect…. I think it is something very different than she described… Do unto others as you want others to do to you… if I don’t want to see everyone’s boobs… I don’t show everyone mine…. If i believe my body is private, I keep it private… But in no way do I feel that I am going to cause some man to stray from his wife, cheat or do other sinful things if I happen to have a little cleavage showing….. Men are responsible adults just like women (I know I giving them a lot of credit here) and they are responsible for their own decisions… if a man cheats it is not because a woman wore a midriff bearing shirt, it is because he has no respect for himself or his partner… end of discussion…
I do however completely agree that young children are dressing too “sexy” these days. There is no reason for the word “juicy” or “flirt” to be written on the rear of a 6 year old. While I do believe men are responsible for themselves, there are pedophiles out there… that is a sickness and I don’t believe parents should allow their children to draw extra attention to themselves with these clothes… On the other hand I think many pedophiles are attracted to an innocence of youth in which case it doesn’t matter what a child is wearing… but still… common sense people!
