Debbie is Done: A history

People who have spent a significant amount of time with me will often eventually here the phrase, “Debbie Done!”  Where did the Debbie Doneness Phenomenon begin and what does it really mean you may be asking yourself, well here you go.

Several years ago, around 5, I came to Iowa for the first time, at the time I never imagined I would live here…. I came with Jason and his brother to come to a tech conference in Des Moines, called Gnomedex.  After the over 6 hour drive  we were waiting at the conference center to be able to get in or something along those lines… I sat for awhile, I stood for awhile… I got very bored and very tired… I became done.  I pouted like a 5 year old and put Jason’s hand on my head to somehow (in my weird mind) reflect the doneness I was feeling….

Doneness has evolved over the years to the point where Jason can clearly recognize it, often me just placing his hand on my head is enough for him to know how I am feeling… It also can be reflected through the ripping up of a napkin after a meal…

Doneness is related to but different from heavyness… I also get “heavy” sometimes.  After a large meal I sometimes may just be done, but if I really ate too much I will be “heavy” instead of done.  When I am heavy the hand on the head is not allowed… In fact during this time no touching is allowed… Sometimes even no talking is allowed…

So why did this come up tonight?  Well I made brownies… I ate too much… I am done… But no one was here for me to proclaim it to… so I had to proclaim it to the blogosphere… So Debbie Done!

As I recall, it wasn’t right after we got there. It wasn’t even necessarily the first day, I don’t think. It was waiting in line to get in for a keynote or other presentation. That wasn’t simply the first time you were done, it remains the standard by which each subsequent occasion is measured.
